Night Vision vs. Thermal Binoculars: Is One Better Than the Other?

Both night vision and thermal binoculars can enable you to see in the dark, though they’re not exactly the same, and there is some confusion out there as to the differences. Hopefully this short post will help with that.

Night Vision

The main difference between night vision and thermal binoculars is in the detection method. Night vision binoculars (and other optics) amplify ambient light, such as moonlight or starlight. Using either a special sensor or an intensifier, a night vision optic collects what little light there is in the darkness and “magnifies” it, producing a sight picture from that available light.

As a result, night vision does require some ambient light in order to work. In complete darkness, it wouldn’t work, but even under the darkest conditions, there’s usually always a little light, even under cloud cover, for night vision binoculars to work effectively.

Night vision is generally classified into one of three generations. The first generation is the most affordable, but it has a limited detection range and produces a lower-quality sight picture. The second is a step up, with a higher sensitivity and a better, clearer image. Generation 3 night vision optics offer military-grade performance and deliver the clearest images with the least noise.

Some night vision optics use “IR illuminators” for assistance, which are like flashlights that send out a beam of invisible light which acts as an assist for the night vision’s sensor. If there is no ambient light, night vision optics can use these for a boost.

While night vision can be highly effective in the field, there are limitations. For one, night vision doesn’t perform well under dense cloud cover (usually), in smoky conditions or under dense vegetation, where detection range will be sharply curtailed.

Thermal Binoculars

Thermal imaging is different from night vision because thermal imaging relies on heat signatures, thermal radiation, not visible light. As a result, thermal optics like binoculars can operate in complete darkness, unlike night vision.

Basically, a thermal optic’s sensor collects thermal radiation, then interprets and assembles it on a display where a sight picture is created, where warmer objects show up in contrast to cooler background objects. Many thermal optics have displays that support numerous color palettes, such as “white hot” or “black hot” and can be customized according to user preferences.

There are a few advantages that thermal binoculars have over night vision alternatives. One is that thermal binoculars work in complete darkness, though like night vision, they may not perform well in heavy fog, smoke, or in thick foliage.

They’re also potentially better for night hunters because warm blooded targets, like hogs and predators, will stand out in sharper contrast against a cooler background. This is particularly effective at extended ranges in which target ID would be more difficult with night vision optics.

Thermal imaging also tends to have a longer detection range, which makes it more suitable at extended ranges. On top of that, thermal optics tend to be more expensive than night vision.

It’s not that night vision is better than thermal imaging or vice versa. Night vision might work well in one case whereas thermal imaging may work better in another. What works best for you will be determined by your unique use cases.

Whether you’re looking for night vision optics or a pair of thermal binoculars, visit Dark Night Outdoors. They carry a wide range of thermal optics and can make recommendations if you’re not sure what will work best for you, give them a call at 309-781-8421.
