Two Great Recoil-Reducing Glock Upgrades

One of the great things about Glock handguns is their simplicity. Shoot one Glock and you more or less know how to load, work the action of, and shoot another.

Their simplicity is great, and another great thing is the polymer construction, which does not just include the frame, but extends to other components like the guide rod.

The fact that so much of Glock handguns are polymer makes them lighter and easier to carry, as well as rust-resistant.

But that lightness is also a curse. It means that recoil can be worse among Glocks than among similarly-chambered guns that are heavier.

With that in mind, here are two Glock upgrades that will help reduce recoil, regardless of caliber, attachments or other features.

Glock Compensators

This is the number one Glock upgrade if your goal is recoil reduction, and it can be a game-changer for models such as the Glock 20, chambered in 10mm, and Glock 22, chambered in .40 S&W, as these cartridges produce a considerable amount of felt recoil.

A good Glock compensator can reduce recoil significantly, and some are relatively easy to install, requiring minimal to no modifications to the gun itself.

Compensators vary in configuration, but the same principle of operation underlies all of them. Basically, a compensator redirects gasses and how they are vented at the muzzle of the gun.

In most cases, a Glock compensator will either port gasses directly upward; if not, it will vent gasses up at the muzzle at a 45° angle, away from the front sight, and splitting the sight picture.

Doing so redirects the forces of felt recoil and can have serious impacts. In most cases, a Glock compensator can reduce felt recoil by as much as 30% to 50%.

This results in less fatigue while you’re shooting, and can also be a big boost for smaller-framed and lighter shooters.

In addition, the fact that compensators port gasses up also results in a net force downward on the muzzle, directly fighting against muzzle flip.

This keeps your sights more naturally trained on target, enabling faster, more confident, more accurate follow-up shots.

All in all, a good compensator is one of the best Glock upgrades you can make if your goal is recoil reduction.

Heavier Guide Rods

The stock Glock guide rod is another problem. If you replace it with a heavier guide rod, such as a tungsten guide rod, you will stabilize the gun, reduce recoil, and combat muzzle flip.

First, a heavier guide rod adds more static mass. That will help stabilize the muzzle end of the gun and also physically absorb some of the force of felt recoil. It will literally reduce the force of felt recoil.

A guide rod is also strategically placed near the muzzle of the gun, which means that it pulls down on the muzzle as the force of recoil pushes it upwards.

In other words, a heavier Glock guide rod directly counteracts the force of muzzle flip, giving it the same relative advantages as a compensator.

Make both of these Glock upgrades and you will have a Glock that shoots smoother, kicks less, and enables faster, more accurate follow-ups.
