4 Ways a Reverse Osmosis Water Filter Can Be a Game Changer

Some types of water filtration or water purification systems are better, if not just more capable, than others. Reverse osmosis filters are among the best of them.

The premise of reverse osmosis water filtration is the passage of water molecules across a semi-permeable membrane. To keep things as basic as possible, think of this like a molecular sieve with very tiny holes; only pure water (for the most part) can get through, leaving everything sequestered on the other side.

Whereas some types of filtration only remove certain types of chemical or biological contaminants from a water supply, reverse osmosis can remove up to 99%, or even more, of total dissolved solids.

Here are 4 ways an RO water filter, even a small reverse osmosis water filter for a countertop, can be a game changer.

Obviously, You Get Better Smelling, Better Tasting Water

Like some other forms of water filtration systems, reverse osmosis can remove chlorine and chloramines that are the main culprits of off-tastes and odors in water. This will result in better tasting food and drinks, like coffee and tea.

That said, RO can also remove other dissolved solids that can cause turbidity along with off-putting colors, tastes and odors, too.

RO Water Filters Can Remove Lead and Heavy Metals

Lead and other heavy metals, like cadmium, have become an increasing concern for homeowners in recent years, especially with so many instances of lead in drinking water making its way into the news.

According to the NRDC (Natural Resources Defense Council), as many as 250 million people in the United States have concerning levels of lead in their drinking water.

Fortunately, reverse osmosis is highly effective at filtering out heavy metals.

Biological Contaminants Cannot Pass Through an RO Membrane

Because only water molecules (or compounds smaller) can move across an RO membrane, biological contaminants, including bacteria, protozoans, parasitic cysts, and viruses, cannot pass through.

Some reverse osmosis water filters also use other protocols, not just reverse osmosis filtration, to ensure that a water filter is safe and sterilized.

For instance, some RO filters use UV-water purification, which sterilizes microbes, further improving the safety of a water supply.

Many RO Water Filters Can Remove Scale-Forming Minerals

Many RO filters either remove scale-forming minerals or are equipped with additional filtration capabilities that enable them to remove magnesium and calcium from the water.

These minerals, in certain concentrations, result in a hard water supply, and can cause an accumulation of hard water “scale” in plumbing lines and in fixtures and appliances that use water, like coffee machines and ice makers.

Filtering scale-forming minerals out of water used to make coffee, ice, or for other purposes will help extend the lifespan of those appliances.

You Don’t Need a Whole House System; Just Get a Reverse Osmosis Water Filter for a Countertop

If you’re thinking an RO filter system can benefit you and your family, you’re likely right, and you don’t need to get a whole house system. You can just get a reverse osmosis water filter for a countertop.
