Key Differences Between LiFePO4 and Other Lithium Batteries

Lithium iron phosphate batteries, also known as LiFePO4 or simply as LFP batteries, are changing the way people think about lithium batteries.

They offer potentially superior performance when compared to other lithium batteries, and are considerably safer.

This short post will explain the key differences.

It’s All About Lithium Battery Chemistry

Unlike other lithium batteries, such as lithium cobalt oxide and lithium manganese oxide, lithium iron oxide batteries are made with a different cathode chemistry.

The cathode materials used in LFP batteries are not prone to short-circuiting, and they are non-toxic unlike the materials used in lithium cobalt oxide batteries, for example.

The chemical bonds in the cathode materials of lithium iron oxide batteries are also much more stable than other lithium ion battery chemistries.

As a result of this stability, LiFePO4 batteries overall are less likely to overheat, even at higher temperatures, than other lithium batteries.

Notably, even if the battery is overcharged, there is a very low chance of thermal runaway, which disproportionately affects other types of lithium batteries.

This makes LiFePO4 much safer than other types of lithium batteries; in fact, they are the safest type of lithium battery on the market.

On Performance

Because of some of these key differences, LiFePO4 batteries offer some other advantages over other types of lithium batteries.

As stated, the chemistry of LFP batteries is more stable, which makes LFP batteries safer and less likely to experience thermal runaway.

The safety of LFP batteries is even further improved because the battery chemistry of the cathode material is non-toxic. This makes LFP batteries potentially more environmentally-friendly.

LFP batteries also perform admirably with respect to the life of the battery and the depth of discharge (DOD) potential. A good LiFePO4 battery can last through 3000 to 5000 cycles, in some cases, even more. They can also deliver up to 99% discharge without damaging the battery.

The charge efficiency of LFP batteries is also excellent. With an appropriate charger you can charge most LFP batteries from nearly dead to completely full in an hour to two hours, depending.

Interestingly, they’re very light, even among other types of lithium batteries. For example, a comparable LFP battery will only weigh about half of what a lithium manganese oxide battery would weigh; and it should go without saying that they are much lighter than lead-acid batteries.

With that said, the energy density of a LiFePO4 battery is slightly lower than that of other lithium ion batteries, which means LFP batteries are not ideal for small, wearable devices.

Even so, they are excellent for options like powering small vehicles, for marine use, as well as for solar battery storage.

Key Similarities

To close out, it’s important to note that LFP batteries are not completely different from other types of lithium batteries. A few things they share in common are:

  • LFP batteries, like other lithium batteries, need effectively no maintenance.
  • Low self-discharge rate; only about 1-2% per month or so.
  • They are relatively expensive, compared to lead-acid batteries.
  • They should be charged when discharged or dead to prevent damage to the battery.
  • They offer high output power, for consistent performance, even when the battery charge drops below 50%.

All in all, despite their differences, it’s important to remember that these are still lithium batteries and offer many of the same relative advantages.
