When to Replace Split Rings, Hooks and Other Terminal Tackle

Terminal tackle, not just lures, enjoys a finite lifespan. Though we fishermen might not like to admit it, there does come a time when we should retire lures and other tackle, even if we do so begrudgingly.

This short post will give you some insight into when you should replace each element of terminal tackle addressed.

Leaders

Leaders should be replaced immediately the second they start to manifest physical damage. If you can see frays or nicks along the leader, do not cast or drop down again until the leader has been replaced.

It is also advisable to re-tie leaders every time you go out, although a leader that’s a day old, if it shows no other signs of damage, should ultimately be fine.

You should also replace all leaders that remain tied onto your spools at the beginning of each season. Salt air, water, and sunlight can all break them down during the course of a season.

Split Rings

Split rings, which serve as attachment points for hooks and, from the main eyelet, to your leader, should be replaced as soon as they start to manifest any signs of rust.

Also, if the split rings have become deformed under a load or have started to twist open, replace them immediately. Better a few minutes of work replacing a damaged split ring than a lost trophy.

Hooks

All in all, you should pay special attention to the condition of your hooks as you are fishing. Hooks should be replaced as soon as they show signs of corrosion or rust, as well as when the bend in the gap has been bent out or straightened.

Although you should replace hooks once they’ve become damaged or rusted, sometimes all you will need to do is sharpen them. Run the tip of a hook point against your thumbnail; if it sticks, the hook is sharp enough. If not, give it a few passes on a hone until it is back up to snuff.

Teasers

Like other terminal tackle, teasers should be replaced when they become worn, but this is one piece of terminal tackle that shouldn’t cost you a fish just because it is not in prime shape.

After a few strikes or a particularly vicious battle, teasers may drop some of their hair and other dressings. When this happens they will lose flash, color and movement and may become less effective.

Therefore, once they start to exhibit these signs of wear, it might be wise to replace them.
