The ESEE Laser Strike is just one of many knives in the company’s brand profile, but it is often the one chosen by bushcrafters for its versatility married flawlessly to utility.

It may not be as light as an Izula, but it’s also not as heavy and awkward as a Junglas. With that balance in mind, here are the three best reasons the Laser Strike continues to be one of the most popular ESEE knives out there.

Handle Ergonomics

Before we even touch on the blade shape (which, really, is the Laser Strike’s defining feature) let’s take a closer look at the design of the handle.

Perhaps more than any other ESEE knife, the Laser Strike has a handle that’s well adapted to slip-free control and precision.

There is a generous choil worked into the design of the blade. When held in a standard grip, the index finger naturally rests in this choil, providing excellent, dextrous control over the blade, even if the scales are wet, cold or greasy.

The choil helps prevent your hand not only from slipping back off the handle, but more importantly, from slipping forward up the blade (which, all things considered, is far worse), and affords perfect, proximal control over the point and edge.

Blade Profile

When we’re looking at the Laser Strike, it is the blade profile more than the steel which captures attention. In this model, ESEE uses its standard 1095 with a powder coat, but it does diverge from the norm with the blade shape.

The blade profile is the second best thing about the ESEE Laser Strike, although, assuredly, there are some who would put this in spot one.

Whereas nearly all other ESEE Knives, like the 3, 4, 5, 6, Izula, Candiru and Junglas sport drop points, the Laser Strike is a token spear point.

The symmetry of the spear point makes it not just efficient for piercing, but also gives the tip incredible strength. Also, because it is symmetrical, it can be used for drilling, and more efficiently than a drop point could be.

A spear point knife is therefore one of the most versatile of all blade profiles, and retains excellent tip strength in the mix.

Handle Scale Storage Space

There’s one other feature that users have keyed in on with respect to the Laser Strike, and which they love, which you’d never even notice if you weren’t paying very close attention, and we mean that literally.

In fact, it’s a feature you’d miss unless you had the heart to take the knife apart, and we mean that literally.

If you take the scales off of an ESEE Laser Strike, you will notice that there is a long, slender void in the tang of the knife that corresponds to a gap between the scales.

While there isn’t a lot of space here, the amount of room is perfect for a small ferrocerium rod fire starter; or, if you have one of those already on the Laser Strike’s thermoplastic sheath, the space is perfect for a little bit of tinder like lint, char cloth, or waxed cotton puffs.

Either way, this is a small feature that is easy to overlook, but which offers a lot of implicit value, especially for survivalists, preppers and bushcrafters.
